A typical Zouaves match is conducted on the 200 yard range at the Santa Clara County Shooting Sports facility, using full 200 yard targets ("SR"), and reduced size targets to simulate 300 ("SR-42") and 600 ("MR-52") yard distances. The facility does not have pits, so in order to conduct a match in an efficient manner the following changes have been made to the typical highpower course of fire (commonly called "across the course" or abbreviated as "XTC"):

  • Sighting shots are strictly limited to a five minute firing period at the beginning of the match.
  • Target changes are conducted after each stage of the match.
The Zouaves offers 3 different XTC course of fires and one slow fire only course of fire, all conducted at the same time on the same firing line. The shooter may chose which course of fire they will shoot when signing in for the day. If we hold more than one relay on a given day (participation usually dictates this) a shooter may choose to shoot the same course of fire again, or pick a different course of fire for the second (and subsequent) relays at no additional cost.

  • 50 shot "10OH" XTC; Total possible points = 500
    • Stage Descriptions:
    • Slow Standing "Offhand" stage: Ten (10) slow standing shots in 10 minutes, single loaded, no sling support.
    • Rapid Sitting stage: Ten (10) rapid fire sitting shots in 60 seconds, Two magazines loaded with 2/8 rounds.
    • Rapid Prone stage: Ten (10) rapid fire prone shots in 70 seconds, Two magazines loaded with 2/8 rounds.
    • Slow Prone stage: Twenty (20) prone shots in 20 minutes, single loaded.
  • 50 shot "20OH" XTC; Total possible points = 500
    • Slow Standing "Offhand" stage: Twenty (20) slow standing shots in 20 minutes, single loaded, no sling support.
    • Rapid Sitting stage: Ten (10) rapid fire sitting shots in 60 seconds, Two magazines loaded with 2/8 rounds.
    • Rapid Prone stage: Ten (10) rapid fire prone shots in 70 seconds, Two magazines loaded with 2/8 rounds.

    • Slow Standing "Offhand" stage: Twenty (20) slow standing shots in 20 minutes, single loaded, no sling support.
    • Rapid Sitting stage: 2 strings of ten (10) rapid fire sitting shots in 60 seconds each, Two magazines loaded with 2/8 rounds. Total of 20 shots.
    • Rapid Prone stage: 2 strings of ten (10) rapid fire prone shots in 70 seconds, Two magazines loaded with 2/8 rounds. Total of 20 shots.
    • Slow Prone stage: Twenty (20) prone shots in 20 minutes, single loaded.
  • 2x600 Slow Prone; Total possible points = 400
    • Two stages of twenty (20) prone shots in 20 minutes each, single loaded, fired at 100yard reduced 600yard targets ("MR-31C"). Total of 40 shots.
Each stage is preceded by a 3 minute preparation period used for assuming the shooting position, setting up equipment, and dry-firing.

In between stages, the firing line will be cleared and all rifles made safe (grounded, unloaded, magazines out, safety flags in) so that a target crew can go downrange to retrieve and post targets. After the sighter stage, instead of changing targets, the target crew will apply pasters to your target. There will be no handling of rifles at all, for any reason, when the target crew is downrange.

Each shot will be scored for 5 to 10 points, with shots in the X-ring being worth 10. X's are also counted separately and used to break numerical ties. Shots outside of the 5-ring are counted as a Miss.

Club Classifications
Our club classification method is similar to that defined by the CMP, with slight differences in the way a competitor advances in class. Our classifications are for club purposes only and do not apply at other venues.

Suitable Rifle for our Matches
Shooters choosing to shoot an XTC match compete with either Service or Match rifles as defined by CMP/NRA rules.

Consult the CMP "Highpower" rule book here for specifics.

Consult the NRA "Highpower" rule book here for specifics.

In general, "Service Rifles" consist of M1 Garands (30.06), M1A's (.308 Win/7.62MMx51 NATO) and AR-15 variant (.223/5.56mm) rifles. They must be of military profile, and equipped with front-post iron sights or optics of 4.5x power or less. "Match Rifles" are bolt or semi auto action rifles that do not conform to a military profile, use any "match" style iron sight or non-service rifle compliant optic and/or shoot a caliber other than 30.06, .308 Win/7.62MMx51 NATO or .223/5.56.

The club has loaner service rifle iron sighted M1s and AR15s (California "featureless" compliant) available if you do not have your own. Please note if you borrow a club gun, you are required to purchase club supplied ammunition. If shooting your own personal rifle, you may use whatever ammunition you choose.

Shooters choosing to shoot the 2x600 may use any rifle they wish so long as it conforms to the range rules as specified by Santa Clara County Field Sports Park regulations. Basically, no full autos and no .50BMGs. Please contact the range office directly if you have specific questions about your rifle/caliber at (408) 463-0652.
