A typical high power rifle match is conducted on the 200 yard range at the Santa Clara County Shooting Sports facility.  The facility does not have pits.  In order to conduct a match in an efficient manner the following changes have been made to the typical course of fire:

A typical match consists of two relays (10 - 15 participants per relay) of shooters.  We use the National Match course of fire that consists of the following:
Five (5) sighter shots (any position) single loaded shots in 5 minutes. (commands)
1. Ten (10) standing (off-hand) single loaded shots in 10 minutes. (commands)
2. Ten (10) rapid fire standing to sitting shots in 60 seconds. (commands)
3. Ten (10) rapid fire standing to prone shots in 70 seconds. (commands)
4. Twenty (20) prone single loaded shots in 20 minutes. (commands)

The "Off hand" position.

Rapid fire sitting

Prone

There are a possible total of 500 points during the match.  Due to range restraints all positions are shot at a distance of 200 yards.  The scoring circles are reduced at stages 3 and 4 to simulate 300 yard and 600 yard distances normally encountered in "across the course" matches.

Shooters compete against others at their same skill level.

Shooters compete in the Service rifle category or with Match rifles.  Service rifles consist of M1 Garands, M1A's and AR-15 variant rifles.  Match rifles are typically bolt action Remington 700's or Winchester Model 70's in .308 or .223 caliber.  All rifles use open sites (no scopes).  Shooters without rifles may use club M1 Garands.

Matches start at approximately 8 AM and typically finish around noon.  A score sheet listing each shooter's score and ranking is mailed to each participant.
